lyrics

So blühst du auẞen, blühst darin,
Daẞ Frühlingskraft sich doppelt regt;
Das Röslein wächst und füllt den Sinn;
Ich schwimme in dem Liebesduft,
Unendlich ist das Blau der Luft.

Ihr Sterne wähnt in Winternacht,
Daß ich von süssem Weine glüh’?
O freut euch, wie ich einsam blüh’,
Mein blühend Herz beim Röslein wacht;
Sie ist der Wein, von dem ich glüh’,
Die ich tief atmend an mich zieh’,
Sie ist von Dir der Liebesschein,
Du bist in ihr nun doppelt mein;
Gern tät’ sich Lust in Worten kund
So lebenswarm, wie Tropfen Blut,
Doch mir das Röslein schließt den Mund
Und tut da kühlend mir so gut,
Die Augen füllt ein süsser Drang,
O Liebestau, in Tränen Dank.

Translation by Ann Lemke:

A Star of Love in the Course of the Heavens

A star of love in the course of the heavens
Envelops my open breast with splendor,
A new springtime plays in my heart,
A new rose blossoms upon it.
You are the star full of love and delight,
Your breath cools my breast,
You are the springtime that warms me,
That revels in the flowers of my heart.
You laid the rose upon my heart,
Thus you bloom without, bloom within,
So springtime’s power is doubly aroused,
The rose grows and fills my senses;
I swim in the perfume of love,
Infinite is the blue of the air.

You stars in the winter night suppose
That I glow from sweet wine?
O rejoice, as I bloom alone,
My blooming heart awakened by the rose;
She is the wine from which I glow,
That I, deeply breathing, draw to myself,
She is the gleam of love from you,
In her you are now doubly mine;
Well would desire manifest itself in words
As warm with life as drops of blood,
But the little rose closes my mouth
And in cooling me there, does me good,
My eyes are filled with a sweet surge,
O dew of love, in tears of thanks.
