lyrics

An den Mond

Füllest wieder Busch und Tal
Still mit Nebelglanz,
Lösest endlich auch einmal
Meine Seele ganz.
Jeden Nachklang fühlt mein Herz
Froh- und trüber Zeit,
Wand’le zwischen Freud’ und Schmerz
In der Einsamkeit.

Fliesse, fliesse, lieber Fluss!
Nimmer werd’ ich froh,
So verrauschte Scherz und Kuss,
Und die Treue so.
Ich besass es doch einmal,
Was so köstlich ist!
Dass man doch zu seiner Qual,
Nimmer es vergisst!

Seelig, wer sich vor der Welt
Ohne Hass verschliesst,
Einen Freund am Busen hält
Und mit dem geniesst,
Was, von Menschen nicht gewusst
Oder nicht bedacht,
Durch das Labyrinth der Brust
Wandelt in der Nacht.

Translation by Ann Lemke:

To the Moon

You fill bush and vale again
Silently with glowing mist,
And at last you also release
My soul entirely.
Every reverberation my heart feels,
Of happy and troubled times,
Wandering between joy and pain
In solitude.

Flow, flow dear river!
Never shall I be cheerful,
Thus jokes and kisses have washed away,
And so also faithfulness.
Indeed, I once possessed
What is so precious,
That, to one’s torment,
It never can be forgotten!

Blessed is he who, from the world,
Separates himself without hate,
Holds one friend to his bosom
And enjoys with that one,
What, unknown to mankind,
Or not contemplated,
Through the labyrinth of the heart
Wanders in the night.
