lyrics

Wunsch (Schifferlied)

Translation by Ann Lemke:

Wish (Shipman’s Song)

On the sea I’d like to travel, with you, with you alone,
I’d like to be stranded with you on a lonely island!

There would be no aunts and cousins, only you and I,
There you wouldn’t be so prudish, so hard and cruel!
So hard and cruel!

There you would wrap your lily-white arms lovingly around my neck and chest,
And I, I could kiss you to my heart’s content!
To my heart’s content!

We would sit and knit nets for ourselves and catch fish in the sea,
And the only guest would be Love, and no one else!
And no one else!

On the sea I’d like to travel, with you, with you alone,
I’d like to be stranded with you on a lonely island!
