lyrics

Nachtlied

Der Mond kommt still gegangen
Mit seinem goldnen Schein,
Da schläft in holdem Prangen
Die müde Erde ein.
Im Traum die Wipfel weben,
Die Quellen rauschen sacht;
Singende Engel durchschweben
Die blaue Sternennacht.

Und auf den Lüften schwanken
Aus manchem treuen Sinn
Viel tausend Liebesgedanken
Über die Schläfer hin.
Und drunten im Tal, da funkeln
Die Fenster von Liebchens Haus;
Ich aber blicke im Dunkeln
Still in die Welt hinaus.

Translation by Ann Lemke:

Night Song

The Moon approaches peacefully
With its golden shine,
There in glorious gleaming
The tired Earth falls asleep.
In a dream the treetops sway,
The springs rustle gently;
Singing angels glide through
The blue starry night.

And on the breezes waft
From many a true intention
Many thousand thoughts of love
Above the sleeping ones.
And down in the valley, there glimmer
The windows of my beloved’s house;
But I gaze into the darkness
Silently into the world.
